The Art of Delegation.
I was reflecting on where my business has taken me in the last year. I realize, that there is just not enough hours in a day, or minutes or seconds for that matter to get all things done. I though about all the things I have yet to do. Most importantly, not to ignore certain aspects of the business. There are some aspects I need help with like organizing and delegating.
As an artist my forte is most certainly not organizing and delegating. To me it is too methodical. I spend most of my day living in a day dream thinking of thoughts to transpose as images. I am mostly concerned with line, colour and what medium will suit the idea best. Being inspired by the world and the very basic things around me. I spent most of my life living in the moment. Dreaming is what I do best, and that is not necessarily a good quality in business planning to some extent. I spend a lot of time with myself learning to be self-sufficient. (of course with the exception, of the help from my husband and parents.)
“What is delegating?” I ask myself, like I often do. I looked up the the meaning on the internet. Here I go climbing up Mount Google looking for the Guru, living in some remote website ,to whom I may ask the provoking questions about life. The definition I got was
|“Send or authorize (someone) to do something as a representative “|
Delegate ? I rarely ever use that word delegate in my vocabulary, never ever thought to delegate anything. What do you mean by delegate? Why should I authorize some else to complete the task? How do I delegate? Who could do this task better then me? Where do I find them? I suppose the people who figured the answers to to the riddle ,they’re the ones that are the most successful in business.
I needed my little piece of the cyber world that I can call my own . Were to start? I didn’t really have the time to learn to how to create web page. Most importantly would it be any good? I didn’t know what to do, should I spend the time creating my own webpage ? I thought, because I’ve gone to school for art and graphic arts that designing the page would be easy. How do I talk computer language? People create their own webpages all the time. You can go online and there’s countless of sites that offer you the ability to create your own webpage for little money or for free.
All the web pages template were generic, there was no real “ make you stand out of the crowd” quality. In this market, the art market, standing out in the crowd is essential. The learning curve to learn to use one of this on line sites was almost as time consuming as learning to use the application.
Then it occurred to me I should delegate the task, but who?
The task of finding a graphic company to create my cyber universe was not a difficult thing. I found that a lot of the web company’s that all look the same and no one that stood out crowd, except for Studio-N. I found Studio-N webpages were innovative, different and artistic. Studio-N is who I authorize to create my web page. What I like best about the company was, all the designers, were also artists, so they understand the demands on an artist. They created a webpage that was far better than anything I could’ve ever created. It was awesome to see their ideas. As an artist you spend far to much time with yourself that it is refreshing to see someone else’s ideas. Which in return regenerates your thoughts. I learned that creating a web page is not just about the imagery and the design, it’s also about marketing. How do you get your web page out there? Studio-N knew how to do that. Their job is not to just create a amazing wed page but helping the world to find your cyber space. If I had not delegated the job to them I would have not learn all that I did.
I am writing about Delegation because this is the eve my web page release reception (September 27 at Studio-N between 4-6 pm). Yes you read that right, web page release reception. Though my page has been on line for many months. This is Studio-N’s way to introduce me, my art and my web page to world. How many online DIY web site, OR graphic companies would do that for you?
Nora, Adam, Chris, Christine, and Sarah are just awesome.
You can have a computer and the applications to create and design your own web pages, that does not make you a graphic artist or web designer. I think people forget that graphic design is art within itself, that there is method to creating. I have learned that leaving tasks to people who know can be the best decision you make. Delegation ensures that all things you do are great.
A business is created by many different skills .Guess what? You do not possess them all. My first experience with delegation was great, let’ hope they are all great.
